As the federal government shutdown continues through the beginning of November, Gov. Josh Shapiro has activated an emergency relief plan to support food banks and families after SNAP benefits were suspended for nearly two million Pennsylvanians.

The nation's 42 million recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits will have to wait for them to be restored after losing them on Saturday, which might take weeks.

Organizations like Philabundance warn that food banks are already operating at capacity and are preparing for a 20% increase in demand.

The Trump administration said Monday it will pay partial food benefits this month after two federal judges ordered it to do so.
