The Department of Transportation might be forced to shut down the airspace in certain parts of the country if the government shutdown continues into next week.

Authorities cleared the scene, and operations at the airport resumed, according to a post on X by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

Michael Alfonso, the son-in-law of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, is running for his father-in-law's old Northwoods congressional seat.

It’ll be a disaster in aviation,” Duffy exclaimed. “October is a slower, air travel month, and we have great weather in October.”

Speaking with ABC News' "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz while a ground stop was in effect at Newark Liberty International Airport, Duffy said "We will delay, we will cancel, any kind of flight across the national airspace to make sure people are safe" amid the shortages.
