Amazon Games has suffered layoffs, causing New World to cease new content, while their The Lord of the Rings MMO has reportedly been cancelled.
While the servers will keep the game running through 2026, the MMO will cease to receive new content after Season 10 ends.
New World originally launched on PC in 2021, with the Aeternum edition coming out on PS5 and Xbox in 2024. What seemed like a new era for the MMO ended up being cut short. If the game disappears in the coming years, at least part of it will live on in the Secret Level episode set in its universe.
Amid sweeping layoffs that began throughout ecommerce giant Amazon Tuesday, the company is making "significant" changes to its video games business.

Amazon Games has confirmed that New World will no longer receive new content updates. The decision marks a turning point for the company's biggest gaming project, and perhaps a reckoning for its live-service ambitions.
Amazon Games has announced that New World: Aeternum will be shut down. An exact date hasn’t been shared with the developer saying the game will continue to be playable through 2026. The developers note that the game is no longer sustainable to support.
Amazon says that it will cut an estimated 14,000 jobs from its corporate workforce as it focuses on “reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources."
Apparently, Amazon is done waiting. It's shifted its AI workforce strategy from slow attrition to full throttle. And with that, it's ushering in a new era of post-ChatGPT corporat
