Amazon disclosed a number of layoffs in its gaming division earlier this week, and now those cuts are apparently affecting the team behind New World: Aeternum. Following the recently released Season 10: Nighthaven update, there will be no more new content released for New World: Aeternum.
Earlier this week, Amazon's games division confirmed that it is ending support for MMORPG New World on both PC and consoles.
Amazon Games shares an update on the future of once incredibly popular MMORPG New World: Aeternum, and fans aren't happy about it.
You can compare the page's glow-down yourself. On the Wayback Machine, a version of the New World Steam page from October 7 features 14 screenshots, three trailers, and 'Mostly Positive' recent reviews, plus options to purchase either the game's standard or deluxe edition. It's now all gone.
Fantasy MMO New World got the death knell from Amazon this week, as the company announced season 10 would round out updates to the game amid wider layoffs affecting some 14,000 jobs. Players and devs alike are commiserating, and now a co-founder of Riot Games has put out a call for the talent who are seeking their next gig.
In the update, Amazon will maintain "New World" servers online up to 2026, guaranteeing bug fixes, server merges, and seasonal events such as world bosses and bonus weeks. The company's notice, however, clearly suggests that the game will be over once active support ends.
New World Aeternum is shutting down development of future content updates, but will remain online through 2026, Amazon Games has announced.
New World originally launched on PC in 2021, with the Aeternum edition coming out on PS5 and Xbox in 2024. What seemed like a new era for the MMO ended up being cut short. If the game disappears in the coming years, at least part of it will live on in the Secret Level episode set in its universe.
