Hundreds of schools in northern Scotland will stay shut on Monday after new amber alerts for heavy overnight snow came into force. The Met Office said another 5-10cm (2-4ins) could fall fairly widely in the north east, Highlands and Northern Isles while a few places on the mainland could possibly see 20-30cm (8-12ins).

The Alberni Valley Rescue Squad said it received notice about 7:30 p.m. that the snow-shoers' vehicle had become stuck after significant overnight snowfall.

Heavy, wet snow forecast for the Juneau area this week
As of Monday morning, the snowpack at the Juneau NWS office in the valley was over 30 inches. That correlates to over 30 pounds per square foot of pressure on a flat roof, NWS said. Blowing snow downtown and a mix of freezing rain in different areas means different levels of snowpack throughout the borough.
